New Rules Jan 2010Posted on Tuesday, 2nd February 2010 - 11:23 am by Ray Brown
BJA National Refereeing Commission announcement on new International Judo Federation Contest RulesThe National Refereeing Commission and the Board of Directors have agreed that for a 12 month period from the 1st January 2010 to the 31st December 2010 we shall be applying a shido for the first leg grab infringement and hansoku-make for the second leg grab infringement within the same contest. We appreciate that the EJU and IJF are applying immediate hansoku-make for the leg grab offence, but as the BJA have not been given clear guidance why this decision has taken place from the original pilot of awarding shido for the first leg grab and then hansoku-make for the second leg grab infringement; we have recommended that we adopt this rule until we have a better appreciation of the application of the rule or the possibility of the rule changing within the next few months. The NRC advise that only hansoku-make shall be given for the second leg grab infringement in the same contest when all three referees agree (majority of three). If a clear decision cannot be made then no penalty should be awarded. This 12 month period will allow players, coaches and referees the opportunity of adapting to the leg grab rule change and ensuring the players do not receive a hansoku-make at the outset, but become aware of their negative judo technique. Therefore, giving them the chance to change their contest techniques.
